Blame!
What is the point of rape scenes? specifically the one on the girl with the dragon tattoo??
Oh yes, none.
Actually there is many a point to it. For one, the author witnessed a rape when he was younger and was powerless to stop it. He lived with that guilt for the rest of his life feeling terrible for not being able to save her. Her name was Lisbeth. Then he wrote these books, and had the character named after her. I believe he had to have the character go through much of the same that he witnessed that girl go through, and so much more, so that we the readers or viewers could feel the same guilt sitting in our chairs being able to do nothing to stop what was already written.
I think the whole point is to see Lisbeth taken down to the very bottom and crawling her way back to the top (no pun intended) without the help of anyone. Because at the end of the day we have to believe that as much as we feel bad for Lisbeth and her being raped (among a million other horrible things done to her in her lifetime) we can’t help her so we have to believe that she could rise above it without is. We hope at least.
In the end she does to a degree tie up a lot of the loose ends and gains her freedom back (becoming a citizen, getting a lot of people to pay for what they did for her etc.) Perhaps Stieg wrote it this way to clear his guilt in the sense that he may not have saved her in a real life, but he could save the idea of this woman through his pages. But we’ll never really know how it will all end because there are 7 books we all lost the chance to read.
